GHA-Africa President Report

April 19, 2014

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Global Harmony Associations,

On March 12th 2014, I took a flight from Kotoka InternationalAirport Accra to Murtala Moh’dInternationalAirport Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria. I was picked up at the airport to my house in Lagos. The following day I took the first flight to Ilorin, Kwara state. When I arrived Ilorin, from the airport I chartered a taxi that took me straight to the palace in Oyo state. This journey was almost 60 minutes. My appointment was on the 13th March. Unfortunately I was told His Royal highness left a message that he had an emergency call from the Oyo state Governor and had to go to the State house. I had to fly back to Lagos.

Mr Odoh Diego Okenyodo called to tell me he was at the airport in Lagos. He has just arrived from Abuja and was about proceeding on the second leg of the trip to Oyo state. I immediately informed him of the new development. I called Dr Babalola, Dr Badaru and Madam Titi Arike, all GHA members to inform them that the appointment has been postponed. The following day i was called by his Royal majesty’s press secretary and got another appointment fixed for the 25th of March.

Given the difficulty of these changes, my dilemma then was whether to remain in Nigeria or to leave and come back on the 24th March. I can be dead certain that if I had left, it would have been very difficult for me to be back in Nigeria on the 25th in view of other very pressing commitments. I thought about it thoroughly and decided to wait.

It is interesting to realize that early in the morning on the 25th of March, I set out, the trip was smooth but unfortunately, no GHA members accompanied me.

Historically, the Oyo Empire is one of the great ancient empires in Nigeria; its origin could be traced to Oduduwa in Ile-Ife, cradle of the Yorubas who occupied the western region of Nigeria. Geographical advantage of this region and the trade route played significant roles in the rise of the kingdom. Importation of horses, production of cash crops etc, formed the basis of political power of the Oyo Empire during the reign of the King known as Alaafin Oronipoto whose military powers improved the leadership and value of Oyo warriors.

The commander in chief of the army's abode was strategically located at the magnificent province to ensure an uninterrupted defence from any foreign attack. Hence, Oyo became very powerful and conquered other Kingdoms around it such as Nupe, Sabe etc. The Oyo Empire expanded Southward. Alaafin was and still is the head of the empire of Oyo. There was a system of check and balance to prevent the Alaafin from becoming too powerful. The Oyo Mesi [THE SUPREME COUNCIL OF STATE] and the Ogboni society are the two groups acting as the checks and balances on the powers of the king. In those days the Alaafin, the king could not be disposed but could be asked to commit suicide if he is no more wanted. This is done by sendingthe Bashorun, the warrior to present an empty calabash or a dish of parrot's egg to him and pass a sentence of rejection such as (awon eniyan koo ) meaning the people rejects you and also the gods reject you. By tradition, the Alaafin must poison himself and die. The ethnic homogeneity also contributed to the growth of Oyo Empire. Apart from the Ewe of Togo and the Aja state of Dahomey, who were part of the Oyo Empire, the empire was made up of Yoruba speaking people, having similar custom and regarding Ife as their spiritual home and Oduduwa as their founding father. The final decay of the empire took place in the year 1835.The first signal of the collapse was the effect of the upset of the balance of power of the Alaafin, the Bashorun and the Oyo Mesi in the latter part of the 18th century by Bashorun Gaa.

As I entered the palace, I began to think about what to say. This is because so much of what we do in GHA to build peace depends on public awareness, education and yes our great academic work and writing on peace, harmony and disarmament. Beautiful!GHA is a Peace Force. Because GHA is able to go where no government can- GHA is able to go into homes, into offices, into communities and importantly into the deepest hearts.

The world’s heart is hungry. It reminds me of A.D Williams- “one day we will realize that big hearts will bring us more peace than big weapons.” Our GHA work speaks to our belief that a better, more peaceful world is possible.

The palace hall was a big and beautiful place with the Palace chiefs, the Oyo Mesis, guests, some prominent personalities, the Cultural Ambassador of Yorubaland, the first female Speaker of Oyo state house of Assembly etc, the media and palace photographers all seated. Immediately the King entered we all got up.

The press secretary then announced the purpose for the gathering and an introduction took place.I was given the microphone to speak. I introduced myself and observed all protocol. Before I could begin to talk about the appointment letter, however, I had to explain what GHA is and what we do- because even in that very educated audience of distinguished Nigerians, entrepreneurs, executives, the royals. Palace chiefs, the Oyo Mesis, there were many who had simply never heard of GHA.

The focus of Global Harmony Association was on peace from harmony and the ways in which we in GHA could work to build peace. Peace is something you build. We believe this is a key to meaningful change in the world.

Part of GHA plan is to get people to invest in peace and to highlight GHA’s role in building a peaceful world.I spoke about our latest project, GPS and its significance. I concluded by saying that a society without peace and love is a desert. Peace hunger has become a pretty serious problem globally, our world is terminally ill. We can no longer watch the spring come in a world of cruelty, a world devoid of love. We keep hurting ourselves, we keep hurting our futures.

I then took out my letter of address (see attachment) and read it.

The King responded. He first started by saying he was very happy to be part of GHA. He spoke for over half an hour on peace and harmonious living. He said he will continue to promote peace and was ready to be committed to the GHA values and mission. He then announced he has accepted to be the patron of GHA- Africa officially- and signed the letter.

I then presented him the ABC of Harmony book by Global Harmony Association.

He was very happy and thanked the founder and the members of Global Harmony Association for the appointment and gift.

I left the palace immediately. I then travelled to Ilorin, to enable me catch the last flight to Lagos.

Ayo Ayoola-Amale esq.

GHA-Africa President

LETTER OF ADDRESS on THE OCCASION OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE GLOBAL HARMONYASSOCIATION APPOINTMENT LETTER TO THE HONORARY PATRON OF GHA-AFRICA

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba AlayeluwaLamidiOlayiwola Adeyemi 111, The Oyo Mesis, the Royal highnesses, the media, distinguished invited guests, the Global Harmony Association members present, May I say all protocols observed.

Ladies and Gentlemen.

Let me start by congratulating your royal majesty, on my own behalf, on behalf of GHA International and GHA Africa we congratulate your imperial majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo on your appointment as the patron of GHA-Africa.

With due respect to his imperial majesty I will quote him ”I am a stickler to the rule of law and this is informed by my conviction that if the rule of law is removed from our society we shall be living in an animal kingdom.” These words are words of wisdom. We must appreciate the fact that without justice there can be no peace. Peace comes from harmony. We are here today to present a letter of appointment to the patron of GHA-Africa, The Alaafin of Oyo, His imperial Majesty, Oba Alayeluwa Lamidi Adeyemi 111 because of his commitment to harmony, peace and justice. The Alaafin has remained committed to the cause of peace in Yorubaland.

Global Harmony Association is an international Organization uniting members in more than 80 countries. The organization founder and president is Dr. Leo Semashko, he is the State Councilor of St. Petersburg, a Philosopher, Sociologist and Peacemaker from harmony. He is the Director of Tetrasociology Public Institute in Russia.

The Global Harmony Association mission is: To bring peace from harmony and to pave a conscious way for harmonious civilization on scientifically based ‘ABC of Harmony’ through harmonious education.www.peacefromharmony.org. TheGlobal Harmony Association is recognized as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for collective book, The ABC of Harmony for World Peace…: www.peacefromharmony.org/?cat=en_c&key=478. GHA-Africa major project is in the area of peace building and peace education.

To envision a culture of teaching peace within Africa and the Nigerian society that supports, funds, appreciates and recognizes that peace is not simply the absence of violence but rather a dynamic state of self–inquiry, relationship building and mindfulness. Peace education encompasses relevant curriculum designed to cultivate an environment where questioning, critical thinking, empathy and tolerance are encouraged in and out of the school setting. If we as Nigerians desire to be a peace-building, peace-affirming, peace-loving country, we must dedicate our time, energy and resources toward teaching students about harmony, the culture of peace and non-violence.

A culture of teaching peace is one which advocates teaching ways of behaving that enhance the self-worth of every member of society. This should be of primary concern to our leaders, policy makers, teachers and the educational sector in Nigeria. Teaching for peace in Nigeria means respecting learners’ individuality and inviting a spirit of community.Thank you.
